What is Zinc good for?

Zinc is an essential mineral involved in many physiological processes, including cognitive functions. It plays a crucial role in the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters, which makes it vital for brain health. Studies have shown that zinc supplementation can improve memory and cognitive function, especially in older people, including those in good health, and in people with mild cognitive impairment. Zinc may also have potential neuroprotective effects and may help prevent or slow cognitive decline.

It also plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system by being essential for the development and functioning of immune cells such as neutrophils, natural killer cells and T cells.

Zinc helps regulate the immune response by activating immune cells, and it also acts as an antioxidant, protecting immune cells from free radical damage.

Studies have shown that a zinc deficiency can lead to a weakened immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. Zinc supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of infections, especially in people with zinc deficiency.

It is also known to play a role in the production of antibodies and cytokines, which are essential components of the immune system's response to pathogens.

The studies also showed that zinc would have a direct antiviral effect, as it has been shown to inhibit the replication of certain viruses, including rhinoviruses and coronaviruses.
